Business
Matson, Inc. (NYSE: MATX) provides ocean transportation and logistics services to the domestic non-contiguous economies of Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, and other island economies in Micronesia, as well as premium expedited service from China to Southern California; its fleet includes containerships, combination container/roll-on/roll-off ships, and custom-designed barges. The Ocean Transportation segment transports dry containers of mixed commodities, refrigerated commodities, food products, beverages, building materials, automobiles, household goods, oversized cargo, and vehicles; subsidiary Matson Navigation Company, Inc. supports these operations with intermodal services. The Logistics segment, through Matson Logistics, Inc., offers multimodal transportation brokerage including domestic and international rail intermodal, long-haul and regional highway trucking, specialized hauling, flat-bed/project services, less-than-truckload, expedited freight, less-than-container-load consolidation, freight forwarding, warehousing, distribution, and supply chain management services; Matson Terminals, Inc. provides container maintenance, stevedoring, and terminal services in Hawaii and Alaska. Matson maintains a 35% ownership in SSA Terminals, LLC (SSAT), a joint venture with SSA Ventures, Inc. that operates terminal and stevedoring services at eight U.S. West Coast facilities, including Long Beach, Oakland, and Tacoma dedicated to Matson. Founded in 1882 and headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii, the company operates across North America, Asia, the South Pacific, Japan, and China, serving the U.S. military, freight forwarders, retailers, and consumer goods manufacturers. Recent developments include enhanced contributions from the SSAT joint venture, with $9.3 million in Q3 2025 (up $2.4 million year-over-year) and $23.2 million for the first nine months of 2025 (up from $8.5 million prior year), driven by higher lift volumes; planned capital expenditures of $425 million to $445 million in 2025 support new vessel construction, maintenance, shoreside operations, and logistics equipment lease buyouts.
